be the change

Often I’m asked why Cambodia.

Its not easy to summarize, but coming to this country 7 years ago transformed me by giving me the heart to help children impacted by poverty. The culture and the children of Cambodia affected me in a way I‘d never felt. Their tragic history resulted in almost complete elimination of education and cultural arts, meaning more recent generations have lacked opportunity and resources. Major effort has been made to catch up, but there is still so much help needed in underserved communities.

I took this photo last year as these kids followed me around a temple begging for money. This problem has been reduced, but its still a issue. The richness in culture, ancient architecture, arts and natural beauty masks the reality of exploitation, drugs, trafficking, sex work, and child labor. This is everywhere, but to to be aware of it and support change is what we are capable of, wherever we want to acknowledge it. But the time is now.

There is continuous, positive change among corruption and poverty. To be a part of this process first hand and provide education and opportunities for creative expression is indescribable. To teach Cambodian college and high school students who create opportunities for themselves... to know young women who are strong, independent, and empowered despite their upbringing or previous limitations... to connect with others who share the same passion and push their own boundaries to make a difference, these moments have all been so inspiring and fulfilling. Cambodia is proving that we can “be the change” and we will continue to see more of it.
